Will my maintenance fees go up?

The issue of maintenance fees is always an area of great discussion.

Simply explained, maintenance fees are there to ensure that the accommodation, grounds and facilities are constantly maintained and the resort is managed to the high levels promised at the point of purchase. In most cases, this means that the costs of running the resort including staffing, general maintenance, gardening, laundry etc are shared out amongst all the owners.

As such, maintenance costs usually rise in accordance with inflation. However, the fee could also rise due to changes in the law. For example if there is a requirement for a lifeguard to be on duty at the resort's swimming pool, this will lead to an increase in the resort's costs and, subsequently, a rise in the maintenance fees.
