Page 1 of 30 When did it start? In 1974 Christel and Jon Dehaan came up with the idea that if timeshare owners could exchange their week for a week in another resort – maybe even a resort in another country – it would help to increase their enjoyment of the timeshare product as well as increase the overall value of timeshare. The company they created was Resort Condominiums International (RCI) – the largest exchange company in the world with a membership of 3 million members. In 1997 the Cendent Corporation was formed and is now RCI’s parent company. In 1976 Mario Rodriguez and Thomas Davis started Interval International (II) with the intention of operating in direct competition with RCI. In 2002 (II) was bought by InterActiveCorp. During II’s evolution it was part owned by companies like Hyatt, Marriott and Carlson; although these companies no longer have a stake in II they nonetheless continue to affiliate their resorts with Interval International. Dial-An-Exchange started in Australia in 1995. The operation was extended to Europe in 1999, when a business was opened in the UK. The Australia/New Zealand business is owned and managed by Francis Taylor and Marc Chouniard. The European business is owned and managed by Philip A. Green. It is important to note that while the above is a list of exchange companies, the club that you are a member of may have its own exchange system in place. |
